The last of MIT’s six Climate Action Symposia, What is the World Waiting For? Policies to Fight Climate Change, was held virtually on Monday, November 16, 2020. Topics included:
- changing the organization of the U.S. climate policy-making process;
- augmenting the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change;
- assisting developing countries in combatting damage from climate change; and
- increasing the study of solar geoengineering as a back-up technology.
In Part 1, John Deutch, Institute Professor Emeritus in the MIT Department of Chemistry, introduces the event, and MIT President L. Rafael Reif delivers remarks on the climate challenge.
In Part 2, The Honorable Katherine Castor, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives (Florida) and Chair of the United States House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, delivers an address.
In Part 3, John Podesta, former White House Chief of Staff and current Chair and Counselor of the Center for American Progress, delivers an address.
In Part 4, Todd Stern, Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, delivers an address.
In Part 5, Paul Joskow, Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics Emeritus in the MIT Department of Economics, moderates an audience Q&A and delivers closing reflections.
